Architectural Finish
Warm grain, quiet rooms, crafted rhythm
Wood slat wall systems have moved from boutique hotel lobbies and corporate boardrooms into the heart of contemporary residential design — a finish that does the work of two surfaces at once. Solid wood battens mounted over a concealed acoustic backing create a rhythmic vertical or horizontal pattern across the wall while quietly absorbing sound, softening echo, and warming the room with the natural grain of solid timber. The result is a feature wall that is as functional as it is tactile: a finish you hear as much as you see.
At Alchemy Wall Studio we install every wood slat system by hand — sourcing, milling, finishing, and mounting each batten on-site so the wall reads as continuous grain rather than modular panels. We work in responsibly harvested solid species (white oak, walnut, ash, and reclaimed barn wood when the brief calls for it) and finish every piece in either a matte hardwax-oil that highlights the natural grain or a clear matte sealer for projects where minimal sheen is the priority. Every layout is custom: batten width, depth, spacing, and reveal are tuned to the room dimensions, the lighting, and the acoustic target.
What Makes It Distinctive
How It's Done
We map the room dimensions, existing surfaces, lighting positions, and acoustic targets alongside your design brief. Batten width, depth, and reveal are specified at this stage so the rhythm of the wall is decided before a single board is cut.
Working from physical samples in your actual light, we settle on species — white oak, walnut, ash, or reclaimed barn wood — and finish family (matte hardwax-oil in your chosen tone, or low-sheen clear matte). Every board is sourced through FSC-certified or documented reclaimed stock.
Solid boards are milled to final dimension in our workshop and the chosen finish — oil or clear matte — is applied in controlled coats so each batten arrives on site with consistent sheen and grain depth, ready for installation.
Battens are mounted over the pre-installed acoustic backing using concealed fixing systems that allow individual boards to move with seasonal humidity. Final reveal and end-cap detailing are dialed in by hand so every run reads as a continuous, intentional rhythm.
